Mysuru
The Town Vending Committee (TVC) of the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has proposed a monthly fee for street vendors in nine zones of the city.
The new fee structure, which varies by zone, aims to protect street vendors from harassment and extortion. The decision was made in a recent meeting of the TVC. The street vendors have welcomed this initiative, seeing it as a step towards securing their lawful rights.
A higher fee has been set in the core city areas such as MG Road, Shivaram Pet, Urs Road, Nanjumalige and KR Market.
Cobblers in these areas will have to pay a minimum fee of Rs 200 per month, while in the seven other zones, the fee is set at Rs 100. Fast food, handicraft, clothing, shoes, and footwear shops in zones 1 and 6 are required to pay Rs 1,000, compared to Rs 800 in the other zones. Vegetable sellers will need to pay Rs 350, and the fee for flower and fruit sellers is set at Rs 250.
To include all street vendors, MCC plans to launch a new survey this year. QR code-based ID cards were issued to 1,856 vendors in 2017-18 and to 1,560 vendors in 2021-22. The upcoming survey will aim to incorporate those who were omitted in these past surveys.
According to the street vendors, the TVC’s involvement will bring significant changes to their working conditions. A street vendor from Shivarampet mentioned, it is good that TVC will oversee how we run our business. Once the fee collection starts, we also get all our lawful rights.
