The Smart Road stretch from Clock Tower to AB Shetty Circle in the city is set to revert to two-way traffic, a decision highlighting ongoing issues with local road management. This change comes just three years after the road was converted to one-way at a cost of Rs 2.5 crore due to perceived traffic problems.
Previously, the road allowed two-way traffic with a divider for smoother flow. However, following the expansion of the city bus stand, the local administration deemed it necessary to change the road configuration. In August 2021, a decision was made in a municipal meeting to implement the one-way system, supported by then City Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar.
The one-way system has since led to significant congestion, forcing vehicles to navigate lengthy detours. This issue prompted discussions in a recent municipal meeting, where DCP Dinesh Kumar stated that the original two-way configuration was more effective. He acknowledged the problems caused by the one-way system and noted that the footpath, which had been widened for one-way traffic, would need to be adjusted to accommodate the return to two-way traffic. The administration’s decision reflects the community’s concerns and aims to improve traffic flow in the area.
