Somanahalli lake in Hunsur taluk has come alive again after remaining dry for three years as major pipeline works have begun under a new government funded project led by MLA G D Harish Gowda. The project costing three crore rupees aims to restore water supply to Somanahalli and Maradur lakes which had affected farming and groundwater levels in surrounding villages badly.
Farmers in the region had stopped agricultural activities due to water shortage and the revival of the lake system has brought fresh hope for cultivation and rural life. Earlier attempts to fill four lakes failed due to repeated damage to pipelines but officials later approved a permanent solution using 2.5 kilometres of MS pipes.
Speaking at the launch MLA Harish Gowda said restoring lakes is vital for farmers water security and improving groundwater levels across villages in the constituency. He added that several development works including roads drains and community halls were also launched along with fresh grants for local infrastructure improvement.
The MLA also expressed concern over delayed government funds due to guarantee schemes but said he would meet ministers and the Chief Minister to secure allocations for constituency development. Officials and local leaders present at the event welcomed the project saying it would restore life to lakes and improve drinking water availability in the region.
Local villagers in Somanahalli and nearby areas welcomed the start of the lake restoration work as it is expected to improve agriculture and drinking water supply. They said the project will help raise groundwater levels and bring back farming activities that had stopped for several years.
Harish Gowda reiterated that development of the constituency remains his top priority and promised continued efforts to secure funds from the state government. He also said lakes are lifelines of rural communities and restoring them will ensure long term ecological balance and economic stability for farmers in the region.
The MLA said he would continue working with officials, banks and departments to ensure timely completion of irrigation projects, better rural infrastructure and improved living conditions for farmers.
