BWSSB Sounds SOS Over Water Shortage, Water To Be Reserved In KRS Dam For Next 3 Months

Must read

The depleting water reserve in various dams in Karnataka has become a cause for concern following the delayed arrival of monsoon in the state. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has written a letter to Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Limited (CNNL) seeking to reserve water in the KRS dam for the next three months in order to supply water to the people of Bengaluru. Cauvery water is the lifeline of Bengaluru and depleting water storage in KRS dam has caused concern among officials.
The BWSSB in a letter to the Managing Director of CNNL requested to reserve water in the KRS dam of Mandya district. Bengaluru city needs 1,450 million litres of water daily and it is being provided by the Cauvery River from various stages. This quantity of water is being supplied from the Shiva dam. But, the water flow has to be 700 cusecs only when the required water needed to Bengaluru can be supplied. For an uninterrupted water supply for Bengaluru city, we need 1.6 TMC water per month. From June to August, 4.8 TMC water is required for Bengaluru city. In order to supply water to the people of Bengaluru, we request you to reserve water for the city in the dam, the BWSSB said in a letter.
The Chief Engineer of BWSSB has signed the letter sent to the CNNL. The letter comes at a time when the water level in the KRS dam is depleting and the current water level in the dam is less than 11 TMC. The monsoon which was expected to be set in last week has been delayed due to cyclone Biparjoy.
