The chief commissioner of Bengaluru’s civic body said that the removal of encroachments was pending in as many as 571 survey numbers in different parts of the city barring those stayed by the courts. Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath said that the removal process has begun in parts of Bengaluru and a 15-day deadline has been given to clear them.
In the last week, we have removed 25 encroachments in Mahadevapura and KR Puram zones, Girinath said on Thursday. Since the majority of the encroachments are in these zones, a target has been given and the process is underway. The chief commissioner said the tehsildars were yet to pass an order in 56 cases relating to Mahadevapura. Order has been passed in 110 cases. We have received the report and based on that the encroachments would be removed. We have given the target of 15 days to complete the encroachment removal where the order has been passed.
Girinath explained that the number of properties varies in the 571 survey numbers. There are scenarios where the number of properties in some survey numbers varies from 1-25. We have set a target based on these survey numbers., he said.
When orders are issued for the remaining cases, the removal process will be expanded. The drive to remove encroachments on stormwater drains (rajakaluves) began after heavy rains ravaged parts of Bengaluru in September 2022. The drive was halted earlier this year due to the Assembly elections. An engineer with the BBMP said earlier that the removal process would be resumed right after the election results were announced.
