Motorists violating traffic rules in Haveri city are now receiving penalty notices through the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS).
Introduced in late July, the system uses artificial intelligence and cameras to identify violations and is helping create greater awareness about road safety among motorists.
ITMS cameras have been installed near Hosamani Siddappa Circle, Kaginele Cross and Gutthal Cross. They capture vehicle registration numbers when motorists break rules. At present, notices are being sent to about 100 violators each day through messages to registered mobile numbers. Police officials said notices will also be delivered to offenders’ homes in the coming days.
Superintendent of Police Yashoda Vantagodi said penalties are being issued for riding without helmets, driving without seat belts, using mobile phones while driving and carrying three people on two-wheelers. She said the system has already encouraged more riders to wear helmets and urged everyone to follow safety rules. Police also plan to strengthen the system further.
Residents welcomed the initiative but requested cameras at more important junctions, including Subhas, Basaveshwara, Ambedkar, JP, Valmiki, G.H. Patel and Mahatma Gandhi Circles. Rider Ravindra Shettar said wider camera coverage would discourage motorists from avoiding monitored roads. Residents also sought more zebra crossings and better public education on traffic rules. Officials believe wider implementation can improve road discipline and reduce accidents.
