Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, conducted a review of the power sector in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (AN&Is) at Sri Vijaya Puram on Friday. He was joined by D K Joshi, the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory, as well as senior officials from the UT administration and the Ministry of Power.

The meeting began with a presentation outlining the current power situation in the AN&Is, highlighting power availability, generation, and the gap between supply and demand. It also addressed key challenges and potential solutions. Officials from the Ministry of Power discussed projects aimed at improving the islands’ power infrastructure, including interconnecting grids and distribution enhancements under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

During his address, Manohar Lal noted that this was his first visit to the AN&Is and emphasized its significance for understanding and resolving local power issues. He stressed the importance of reducing reliance on diesel and increasing the use of renewable energy sources, particularly wind power, to lower energy costs. The Minister also suggested exploring alternative energy options, like ethanol, and highlighted the need for Electric Vehicles (EVs) and charging stations.

He urged the UT administration to resolve outstanding dues and work on reducing technical and commercial losses. The Union Minister assured ongoing support from the Government of India for the development of the UT.
