On Tuesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged the Bangladesh government to release 84 fishermen from her state who were arrested for allegedly crossing the maritime border. Banerjee explained that the first incident involved two fishing trawlers from West Bengal, resulting in the detention of 36 fishermen by the Bangladesh Navy. Subsequently, three more trawlers carrying 48 fishermen were also apprehended for the same reason.
In her appeal, the Chief Minister highlighted a recent incident where a Bangladeshi fishing trawler encountered difficulties within Indian waters. She noted that all Bangladeshi fishermen aboard were released, even though they lacked proper documentation. In contrast, the detained fishermen from Bengal possess valid AADHAR cards, underscoring the disparity in treatment.
Banerjee emphasized the friendly ties between West Bengal and Bangladesh, citing their shared cultural and linguistic heritage. She expressed hope for improved relations, stating that maintaining a good relationship is essential for countries that share a border. Furthermore, she reassured the people of West Bengal that she would respect the decisions made by the Union government regarding this matter and urged them to maintain peace and refrain from provocation. Banerjee remains committed to advocating for the fishermen’s release while following the Union government’s guidance.
