Controversy surrounds BBMP’s ‘Kukur Tihar’ stray dog feeding initiative

Must read

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has launched a pilot program called ‘Kukur Tihar,’ aimed at designating specific areas throughout the city for feeding stray dogs. However, public opinion suggests this initiative may serve more as a publicity stunt than a genuine effort to promote animal welfare. Residents have voiced concerns about feeding dogs in designated areas, as these animals tend to congregate in packs, leading to heightened potential for conflicts.

The BBMP has pinpointed one feeding location in each of its eight zones, but this Initiative is not without its challenges. Critics argue that BBMP officials have ignored significant issues in these areas. Allegations have surfaced claiming that the Animal Birth Control (ABC) and Anti-Rabies contractors, in conjunction with the Kukur Tihar program, are colluding to benefit specific organizations, raising questions about the program’s true intent.

Among the selected feeding locations are Manjunath Nagar in Dasarahalli, Konanakunte in Bommanahalli, and Hoodi in Mahadevapura. Many of these sites are pedestrianized, prompting concerns about pedestrian safety with food consistently placed for the dogs. Additionally, residents worry about who will be responsible for cleaning up after the dogs, given BBMP’s assurance that civic workers will handle it, leaving locals doubtful about the frequency of cleanups. A particularly contentious site is adjacent to an Anganwadi in Raghuva Nahalli, where previous attacks on children have heightened safety concerns.
