In the wake of unprecedented rainfall in city, the Karnataka government has directed over 600 families to relocate for eight days as rainwater has inundated several apartment complexes, posing serious safety risks. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar confirmed that residents from affected areas, including Kendriya Vidyalaya and Tata Nagar, are being moved to safer locations.
‘Some areas have recorded rainfall levels 300 percent higher than normal. In Chowdeshwari Nagar alone, we received 150 mm of rain,’ Shivakumar explained. He also mentioned that teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to assist in the relief efforts.
To address flooding, the government has employed 20-25 HP machines to pump water from about 20 affected locations. ‘We cannot stop nature, but our teams are working day and night to mitigate the damage,’ Shivakumar added.
The Deputy CM responded to criticism over not personally visiting the affected areas, saying, ‘It’s not about publicity; it’s about getting the work done. Our priority is to provide permanent solutions, and a committee has been formed to identify problem areas.’
