India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, has risen to second place in the ICC Men’s ODI rankings after a strong performance in the three-match series against Sri Lanka. Despite a challenging series for most batters, Rohit emerged as the top scorer with 157 runs, averaging 52.33 and boasting a strike rate of 141.44, including two half-centuries.

Rohit’s climb in the rankings is also linked to vice-captain Shubman Gill’s struggles in the series. Gill managed just 57 runs at an average of 19. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli maintained his fourth position, tied with Ireland’s Harry Tector, both with a rating of 746.

Even with these performances, the Indian trio still trail Pakistan’s captain, Babar Azam, who remains at the top spot with a rating of 824, despite not playing any ODIs since the World Cup in November 2023, where Pakistan exited in the Group Stage.

Sri Lanka’s Avishka Fernando also made significant strides, becoming the series’ top scorer with 137 runs, which boosted him 20 spots up to 68th place in the rankings. Pathum Nissanka, Sri Lanka’s highest-ranked batter, moved to eighth place, surpassing England’s Dawid Malan.

Sri Lanka’s historic 2-0 series win over India, their first ODI series victory against India in 27 years, has added to the shake-up in the rankings. India is set to face Bangladesh in a series starting in September, featuring two Test matches and three T20Is.
