The Irish government has outlined plans to build a 4,000-seater cricket stadium, set to be completed in time for the 2030 Men’s T20 World Cup. Ireland will co-host the tournament alongside England and Scotland.

Cricket Ireland has been working with government officials to establish a permanent cricket venue at the Sport Ireland campus in Abbotstown, west Dublin. With government approval, the project has advanced to the pre-tender stage. The tender process is expected to begin by mid-2025, with construction projected to finish by 2028, as reported by sources.

Ministers for Sport Catherine Martin and Thomas Byrne are anticipated to officially announce the project, which includes not only the stadium but also a high-performance centre, and plans for an indoor school and media facilities.

Although Cricket Ireland initially planned for an 8,000-seater stadium expandable to 20,000 seats for major events, the first phase will focus on building a 4,000-seater venue. This phased approach ensures the stadium will be ready for the 2030 World Cup, with room for future expansion as cricket grows in Ireland.

The new stadium will address logistical challenges by providing a dedicated venue that meets international standards. An important aspect of the project is the development of new grass pitches, which need several years to mature before hosting international matches. This investment ensures that by the time the 2030 World Cup arrives, Ireland will have world-class facilities ready for the global stage.
