Hockey India has officially retired the iconic No. 16 jersey worn by legendary goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh, following his pivotal role in securing India’s second consecutive Olympic bronze at the recently concluded Paris Games.

During a special ceremony, Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh announced the retirement of Sreejesh’s jersey, a fitting tribute to the 36-year-old’s illustrious career. Sreejesh, who has now transitioned to coaching, has been appointed as the coach for the junior national team. He will be responsible for nurturing the next generation of Indian goalkeepers, with the No. 16 jersey reserved for a future star under his guidance.

Singh remarked, ‘The No. 16 jersey will remain with the junior team, and Sreejesh will train the next Sreejesh who will wear that number.’

Sreejesh’s performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics was nothing short of spectacular, highlighted by India’s historic 3-2 victory over Australia and a remarkable 4-2 shootout win against Great Britain, where Sreejesh’s heroics were instrumental in defending with a man down for over 40 minutes. To honor his contributions, Hockey India organized a felicitation ceremony for Sreejesh on Wednesday.
