Ajay Kamath, the state Secretary of All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO), issued a stern statement on Sunday condemning the Karnataka State Government’s decision to significantly increase fees for government engineering colleges. According to Kamath, the government has raised fees by Rs. 1,400 for government engineering colleges and by Rs. 2,000 specifically for the prestigious University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE). This hike comes after three consecutive years of fee increases, effectively doubling the fees for government engineering colleges to Rs. 42,000.
Kamath criticized the government’s move, asserting that any administration claiming to support the poor and marginalized should not burden students with such hikes in education fees. He accused the government of disregarding protests from students, lecturers, and educationists by separating UVCE and imposing a higher fee structure, potentially transforming the institution into a self-financed entity.
AIDSO views this fee hike as unjustifiable and labeled it as a criminal act. Kamath demanded an immediate withdrawal of the fee hike and called upon all education enthusiasts in the state to unite against the commercialization of professional courses, emphasizing the importance of education accessibility over profit-making motives.
