The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Assistant Commissioner of CGST from the GST Commissionerate in Guwahati for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe.

The accused, identified as M Srinivasa Rao, held the position of Assistant Commissioner of CGST in Guwahati. The arrest follows a complaint stating that the accused issued demand and show cause notices to the complainant and summoned him multiple times to the CGST office.

According to the complaint, the complainant, who had already paid all applicable taxes for civil works, alleged that during a visit to the CGST office, the Assistant Commissioner demanded an undue advantage of Rs. 2 lakh to issue favorable orders. After negotiations, it was allegedly settled at Rs. 50,000.

CBI conducted a sting operation and apprehended the accused while he was accepting Rs. 50,000 from the complainant. The arrest was followed by searches at the accused’s official and residential premises in Guwahati and Hyderabad. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are awaited.
