Haryana is set to launch a waste-to-green coal plant, also known as the green coal plant, following the imminent signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVNL) and the Haryana government. The initiative will initially establish plants in Gurugram-Manesar and Faridabad, with plans for expansion into other cities across the state.

According to a district administration spokesperson, a crucial meeting was convened at Shram Shakti Bhawan in New Delhi, chaired by Chief Minister Manohar Lal, to expedite the implementation of these environmentally beneficial projects.

The government aims to address the growing issue of municipal solid waste by leveraging it for renewable energy production through NVVNL’s green coal technology. This approach involves converting solid waste into bio-coal, a sustainable alternative fuel that can be blended with traditional coal for electricity generation in thermal power plants.

NVVNL has already demonstrated its capability with a similar plant in Varanasi, processing 600 tons of waste daily to produce 200 tonnes of green coal efficiently. The corporation is progressing with plans to establish similar facilities in cities like Haldwani, Vadodara, Noida, Gorakhpur, and Bhopal.

Commissioner of Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), Narhari Singh Bangar, affirmed that initial steps have been taken, showcasing potential sites in Gurugram to NVVNL officials. These initiatives not only promise to resolve waste issues but also boost energy production sustainably.
