The Calcutta High Court issued a verdict on Wednesday nullifying all Other Backward Class (OBC) certificates granted in West Bengal post-2010.
This decision, rendered by Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Rajasekhar Mantha, invalidates OBC certificates issued under the Trinamool Congress administration since 2011. Over 500,000 certificates issued after 2010 are affected, rendering them unusable for job reservations. However, individuals who have already secured employment using these certificates are exempt.
The ruling mentions that certificates issued post-2010 did not adhere to legal procedures and are hence annulled. The state Assembly will now regulate OBC certificate issuance, while the West Bengal Backward Class Commission will determine eligible caste categories. This move aims to rectify past irregularities in OBC certificate issuance, ensuring deserving candidates receive rightful recognition.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday asserted that she will not accept the Calcutta High Court order scrapping the OBC status of several classes in the state.
Addressing a poll rally at Khardah under the Dumdum Lok Sabha constituency, Banerjee said the OBC reservation will continue in the state, as the Bill concerned was passed within the framework of the Constitution.
The OBC reservation quota introduced by the West Bengal government will continue. We had drafted the Bill after conducting a house-to-house survey, and it was passed by the cabinet and the assembly, she said.
