KR Market Grapples with Garbage Overflow and Sanitation Woes

Must read

KR Market, Known for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse array of fresh produce, now struggles under the weight of garbage heaps, chaotic loading and unloading practices, and inadequate waste management. The market now faces numerous challenges, especially concerning the vendors’ access to clean restroom facilities.

Poorna, a vendor at the market, expressed her frustration with the deplorable condition of the washrooms, describing them as inadequate, unsanitary, and neglected. She highlighted issues such as broken taps, faulty latches, and infrequent cleaning, which contribute to the spread of infections among female vendors. Despite their grievances, their concerns often go unaddressed, leaving them to endure these conditions silently.

Lakshmi, another vendor, lamented the daily ordeal of encountering meat waste piled atop fruit and vegetable waste, emitting a foul odor that persists until the BBMP waste trucks arrive. She noted the missed opportunity during the COVID-19 pandemic to implement a waste management system and improve restroom facilities, indicating a lack of proactive measures by the authorities.

Jameel, a meat seller, highlighted the negligent disposal of meat waste within the market premises, leading to unsanitary conditions and the risk of disease outbreaks. Despite the health hazards posed by the accumulated waste, garbage clearance remains infrequent, exacerbating the situation.

Zubair, echoing the sentiments of many vendors, underscored the need for self-reliance in waste disposal, as they cannot depend solely on BBMP for assistance. Despite their disillusionment with the current state of affairs, vendors like Zubair continue to persevere in their businesses, driven by the necessity of earning a livelihood within the confines of KR Market.
