Bengaluru Residents Seek Relief Amid Sweltering Heat

Must read

Bengaluru residents are turning to pharmacies in search of relief from heat-related ailments. A notable surge in the sales of rehydration products such as ORS, glucose, and electrolyte supplements has been observed in recent weeks, according to Raghunath, President of the Karnatakas Chemist and Drugs Association. Sales have soared by 50% compared to the same period last year, with supplies dwindling in some areas.

Despite this surge in demand for heat-related remedies, overall pharmacy business in the city is experiencing a downturn. Raghunath suggests that this decline may be attributed to residents migrating to their hometowns or villages to escape the oppressive heat.

Alongside rehydration products, over-the-counter medications like paracetamol tablets and cold and cough remedies are also in high demand. Dinesh, a pharmacist at a pharmacy on St Mark’s Road, reports a 30% increase in paracetamol sales over the past year, indicating a growing need for relief from heat-induced discomfort.

Usha, a science officer at a medical store in Shanthala Nagar, explains that high temperatures weaken the body’s immune system, leaving individuals more susceptible to viral infections, fevers, and respiratory issues, hence the increased demand for medications to combat these ailments.

To mitigate these conditions effectively, medical professionals advise residents to stay hydrated, wear loose cotton clothing, and avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours, which typically occur between 12 pm and 3 pm. Opting for homemade buttermilk or fresh coconut water can provide a natural and effective means of staying hydrated and maintaining electrolyte balance.
