In a surprising move, New Zealand has appointed Michael Bracewell, an experienced all-rounder, as captain for the upcoming five-match T20I series against Pakistan. Bracewell, who has been sidelined due to injuries including a ruptured Achilles and a broken finger, returns to lead the team. His selection comes as key players like Kane Williamson and Mitchell Santner will be absent due to their commitments in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
New Zealand selector Sam Wells expressed excitement about Bracewell’s return to cricket after a prolonged absence, citing his leadership experience with Wellington, New Zealand A, and New Zealand XI teams. Despite missing several regular players, including Trent Boult and Devon Conway, the squad is youthful, featuring players like Finn Allen, Jimmy Neesham, and Ish Sodhi, expected to play crucial roles.
Additionally, fast bowler Will O’Rourke and hard-hitting batter Tim Robinson are set to make their T20I debuts, with selectors acknowledging their potential. The 15-member squad, led by Bracewell, will embark on the Pakistan tour, with matches scheduled to commence on April 18 in Rawalpindi. This series serves as valuable preparation for both teams ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June.
