India has voiced deep concern over recent attacks on the Hindu community in Chittagong, Bangladesh, and called for decisive action by the Bangladeshi government to ensure the safety and security of Hindu residents. Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), on Thursday condemned the incidents, which involved vandalism and looting of Hindu-owned properties and businesses. These events reportedly occurred following incendiary social media posts targeting Hindu religious organizations.
Jaiswal addressed the issue during a media briefing, saying, “We have observed with concern that there have been attacks on the Hindu community in Chittagong. Their properties have been looted, their business establishments vandalized.” He urged Bangladesh to take firm measures against the “extremist elements” responsible, noting that such incidents could lead to further unrest.
According to reports, the tension in Chittagong began after a social media post criticized the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), sparking clashes between Hindu residents and law enforcement. In response, police and military forces conducted operations in the affected area on Tuesday night, reportedly firing warning shots and detaining about 100 suspects.
In addition to this issue, India reiterated its commitment to peace and stability in neighboring Myanmar. Jaiswal noted that India’s recent interactions with Myanmar, including workshops on constitutional and federalist frameworks, are intended to support Myanmar in addressing its internal challenges with a solution led by its own people.
