Bayern Munich is in mourning following the death of a fan who attended their 1-0 win over Benfica in the UEFA Champions League. The club confirmed early Thursday that the fan passed away while being transported to the hospital after a medical emergency occurred during the match.
The atmosphere inside Bayern’s stadium was noticeably subdued after the incident, which occurred shortly after kickoff. Fans refrained from chanting or singing in respect, following a statement from the Club Nr 12 supporters’ group, which said, “Life comes before sport. We wish the family and friends lots of strength.”
The emergency prompted paramedics and police to attend, and after about 30 minutes, the individual was carried out on a stretcher. Bayern fans did not resume their usual support after the event.
Despite the somber atmosphere, Bayern secured a 1-0 victory, thanks to a 67th-minute header from Jamal Musiala, assisted by Harry Kane. This win ended Bayern’s two-game losing streak in the competition. Midfielder Konrad Laimer expressed his thoughts on the situation, saying, “We didn’t know of it during the game, just after it… we’re hoping for the best for the individual fan.”
