India’s Kiran George pulled off a brilliant upset at the Korea Masters on Thursday, defeating third seed Chi Yu Jen of Chinese Taipei 21-17, 19-21, 21-17 in a thrilling second-round match. The contest, which lasted 75 minutes, saw George, ranked 44th in the world, showcase his skill and determination.
The 24-year-old, the lone Indian in the tournament, will now face fifth seed Takuma Obayashi of Japan in the quarterfinals. George holds a perfect record against Obayashi, having won all their three previous encounters, including two straight-game victories earlier this year at the Malaysia Masters and Swiss Open.
In the first round, George also fought past Vietnam’s Kuan Lin Kuo, winning 15-21, 21-12, 21-15 in a tough three-game contest. The rising Indian shuttler aims to continue his strong run and make it to the semifinals.
