The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) announced a 10% reduction in water supply to users consuming between 40 lakh and 2 crore litres per day, effective from April 10. This decision is part of the board’s efforts to address the water scarcity issue affecting various large establishments, including skyscraper apartments and gated communities.
Earlier, BWSSB had enforced a 20% water supply cut to 38 bulk users consuming over two crore litres daily, resulting in significant water savings of nearly 10 Million Litres per Day (MLD).
BWSSB Chairman Ram Prasath Manohar V conducted a meeting with users falling within the aforementioned consumption bracket on April 1, urging them to adopt the “green star challenge.” This initiative encourages the adoption of water conservation technologies, increased utilization of treated water, implementation of borewell monitoring technology, installation of rainwater harvesting pits, and raising awareness among users.
Furthermore, BWSSB initiated the supply of recycled water for construction activities, following discussions with associations like the Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India (Credai) and the Bangalore Apartments Federation (BAF) to address the water crisis.
In March, BWSSB prohibited the use of potable water for non-drinking purposes such as construction activities and vehicle wash. This proactive measure aims to reduce reliance on borewells and preserve potable water resources. Manohar highlighted a significant decrease in water distress complaints, attributing it to the board’s interventions. He emphasized the reduction in potable water usage for non-drinking purposes, which has enhanced water supply by 20 MLD in Bengaluru.
