Kolar

A concerning revelation has emerged in Kolar city, where it has been discovered that 17 trees were felled without proper authorization, exceeding the permitted limit of 10 trees for the development of the inter-Gangetic road. The incident occurred along the stretch from the KSRTC bus stand signal to the Keelukote railway bridge, where various species of trees were cut down. The Public Works Department had initially sought permission to clear 10 trees to facilitate the smooth flow of traffic and road development. However, it has been brought to light that the contractor awarded the tender for the project went ahead and cleared 17 trees, surpassing the approved limit. This unauthorized action not only represents a financial loss to the government but also raises environmental concerns. Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) V. Edukondalu expressed concern over the situation, stating that a notice has been issued in this regard. The authorities plan to impose fines and collect compensation for the unauthorized felling of trees. The types of trees affected include Gul Mohar, Ashoka, and Mahogany. While some motorists had raised concerns about certain trees causing issues on the Inter-Gange road, the excessive clearing has drawn criticism from the public. Public Works Department Executive Engineer Ramamurthy acknowledged the need for tree removal due to road development but clarified that the felling should have adhered to the approved limit. The incident has sparked public outrage over the environmental impact and the breach of permissions.
