China is set to become a hub for 3×3 basketball events, with plans to host more tournaments in 2024, according to Ignacio Soriano, the FIBA 3×3 Head of Events and Partnerships. Soriano praised China’s active role in 3×3 basketball, particularly in hosting professional-level events. China is one of the countries having more activities in the professional level, he stated. We’re going to have three (more) World Tours by the end of this year. We had seven challengers, three women’s series. So basically, we have been hosting every single different event of the competition network. The FIBA 3×3 World Tour recently concluded in Shanghai, and upcoming events will be held in Chengdu and Wuxi, China. In 2023, the 3×3 World Tour features 13 stops, with an Olympic Qualifying Tournament scheduled for November 1. China’s success in 3×3 basketball is reflected in its top ranking in the FIBA 3×3 Federation Ranking, with the women’s team ranked first and the men’s team ranked third. This ranking positions them well for direct qualification to the Olympic Games. Soriano revealed ambitious plans for China, including the creation of a 3×3 super league within the country and the continuation of high-quality events. The plan is to have at least the same number of events next year. We are positive and expect to have more, he said. 3×3 basketball, introduced into the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020, offers a more accessible and versatile version of the sport. Soriano emphasized its unique qualities, stating, I would not compare it with 5×5. I think this is two different products. The training is different, the tactic is different, the strength that you need to have for one and the other is different. FIBA is already in negotiations for the 3×3 Basketball World Cup in 2026 and aims to create events that provide both sporting and entertainment experiences.
