Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya felicitated India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 weightlifting medallists with cash rewards, praising their historic performances in Glasgow.
Indian weightlifters competed across 11 weight categories and won eight medals, including one gold, six silver and one bronze. The contingent also set several Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth records, while multiple athletes achieved personal-best lifts.
Mandaviya presented cash awards of Rs 30 lakh to gold medallists, Rs 20 lakh to silver medallists and Rs 10 lakh to bronze medallists. Congratulating the athletes, he said their achievements had made the entire nation proud and were celebrated even in Parliament.
The minister also recognised the contribution of coaches, including Dronacharya Award recipient Vijay Sharma, describing their role as vital in developing champions.
Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu created history by becoming the first Indian weightlifter to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals. Rishikanta Singh and Valluri Ajay Babu set new Commonwealth Games records in the snatch, while Gyaneshwari Yadav and Harjinder Kaur recorded personal-best performances.
Mandaviya highlighted the role of Khelo India and Sports Authority of India training centres in nurturing athletes. He urged the medallists to visit schools and colleges and inspire young people to pursue sports.
The minister encouraged athletes preparing for the Asian Games 2026 to continue improving and assured them of the government’s support, emphasising India’s long-term vision of building a strong sporting culture.
