The Commonwealth Games 2026 concluded in Glasgow with Scotland formally handing over the baton to India, which is set to host the 2030 edition in Ahmedabad.
The closing ceremony marked the end of a successful Games and signalled the beginning of India’s preparations to stage one of the world’s biggest multi-sport events. The handover placed Ahmedabad in the global sporting spotlight as the city prepares to welcome athletes and delegations from across the Commonwealth in 2030.
India enjoyed a strong campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, finishing fourth in the overall medal standings. The Indian contingent won 39 medals, comprising 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze.
Indian athletes delivered notable performances across several disciplines, showcasing the country’s growing sporting depth and competitive strength. The medal tally reflected the contribution of established champions as well as emerging athletes who impressed on the international stage.
The successful campaign also provided momentum for India’s long-term sporting ambitions. With the Commonwealth Games returning to the country after two decades, preparations are expected to focus on developing world-class infrastructure, strengthening athlete support systems and ensuring a memorable experience for participants and spectators.
Ahmedabad’s hosting of the 2030 Games is expected to boost sports development, tourism and infrastructure while creating opportunities for young athletes and local communities.
The formal handover from Scotland to India brought the Glasgow Games to a close and marked the start of a new chapter. India will now look to build on its 2026 performances and deliver a successful Commonwealth Games on home soil in 2030.
