Glasgow success offers India fresh hope

Blurb: The campaign brought medal success, breakthrough achievements, new national stars, and shattered barriers across sports

India’s memorable Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign in Glasgow produced a string of historic firsts and introduced several promising new stars, raising hopes ahead of next month’s Asian Games.

India finished fourth in the overall standings with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze. The achievement exceeded expectations, particularly as the Glasgow edition featured a reduced sporting programme that limited India’s traditional medal opportunities.

Several sports that contributed significantly to India’s medal tally at the 2022 Commonwealth Games were excluded from the 2026 programme. Six of the 12 disciplines in which India won medals in Birmingham were removed, accounting for 30 of India’s 61 medals in the previous edition.

Despite the reduced number of events, Indian athletes delivered impressive performances across the available disciplines. The campaign was marked not only by medal success but also by breakthrough achievements, new national stars and barriers being broken in several sports.

For many athletes, however, Glasgow was viewed as an important checkpoint rather than the main target of the season. The Asian Games, scheduled for next month, will provide a tougher and more realistic assessment of India’s progress.

Unlike the Commonwealth Games, the Asian Games will feature stronger competition from major sporting nations, including China, Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Indian athletes will face greater depth and higher standards across disciplines.

The Glasgow campaign has nevertheless provided confidence and momentum. Established champions maintained their consistency, while emerging athletes demonstrated their ability to perform under international pressure.

India’s success in Scotland has created optimism about the country’s sporting future. However, the upcoming Asian Games will determine whether the promising performances and new stars from Glasgow can translate into sustained success against stronger continental competition.
