Collector urges compliance with waste segregation rules

Officials warned for non-compliance; new rules effective April 1, with deadlines set for state policies, dump-site mapping, and urban waste management by 2027

District Collector C N Sridhar said strict implementation of Solid Waste Management Rules 2026 is necessary for environmental protection in Gadag district. He chaired a meeting at the City Collectorate office and instructed officials to ensure cooperation from all local bodies. He said every household, business and institution must separate waste into four categories and hand it over to municipal collection vehicles regularly. Waste should be divided into wet, dry, sanitary and special care waste as per the new rules. He explained kitchen waste, plastic, cloth, metal, medical items and e waste must be separated correctly. He also directed identification of bulk waste generators like hotels, hostels, malls and apartments for mandatory registration.

Officials were warned to take action against those who fail to follow the new rules strictly. Project Director Basanagowda Kotoora said the rules came into effect from April first and timelines have been fixed for states and local bodies to complete policy and mapping work. He said September thirty 2026 is last date for state policies and October 30 2026 is deadline for mapping old dump sites. He added that by October 31 2027 all urban local bodies must adopt by laws for waste management.

District officials, local body heads and departmental representatives attended the meeting and discussed implementation strategy and monitoring mechanisms for the new rules across Gadag district. They were informed about responsibilities for waste segregation awareness programs enforcement actions and timely reporting to ensure compliance at every level.

The Collector emphasized that clean environment and scientific waste disposal are essential for public health and urban development in the district. He appealed for public cooperation and warned that strict legal action will be taken against violations under the new solid waste management rules. Awareness campaigns will be conducted through schools media and local organizations to build a cleaner and healthier Gadag district for future generations. He also said that cooperation from citizens is key to success and every household must follow segregation rules responsibly for sustainable waste management.
