The Trinamool Congress on Saturday approached the Election Commission of India, accusing Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of making derogatory and divisive remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during the ongoing election campaign.
In its complaint, the party referred to a speech delivered by Sarma at a rally in Cooch Behar district. It alleged that he made inappropriate comments regarding Banerjee’s concerns over food habits if the BJP comes to power in the state. According to the Trinamool Congress, such remarks were misleading and aimed at creating confusion among voters.
The party further claimed that Sarma made unverified and inflammatory allegations about the Muslim community, including claims about beef trade activities in certain areas. It stated that these comments were intended to create fear, mistrust and division among different religious groups in West Bengal.
In its letter submitted to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer, the Trinamool Congress said that such statements could disturb peace and affect the smooth conduct of elections. It warned that such rhetoric may lead to tension and law and order issues if not addressed immediately.
The ruling party requested the Election Commission to take strict action against Sarma and the BJP. It urged the poll body to issue a show-cause notice and hold them accountable for the alleged violations.
Additionally, the party demanded that police authorities be directed to register a First Information Report against the Assam Chief Minister. It stressed that strong action was necessary to prevent the spread of communal tension and to ensure free and fair elections in the state.
