Demand to declare Nov 14 as ‘Diabetes Reversal Day’
Shivamogga
In Shivamogga, doctors from the Diabetes Reversal Centre have urged the government to officially declare November 14—currently observed as World Diabetes Day—as Diabetes Reversal Day. Speaking at a press conference, Dr. Preetham announced that a formal request will be submitted to the government through the Deputy Commissioner in the coming days.
He explained that World Diabetes Day has been observed since 2006, but public awareness still remains limited regarding the root causes of diabetes. According to him, poor dietary habits and chronic mental stress are the primary contributors to diabetes. Medication, he noted, only offers temporary relief and does not provide a permanent cure. Instead, significant improvements can be achieved when individuals adopt healthier food practices and lifestyle changes. Through diabetes reversal techniques, many patients can reduce or even completely discontinue their medication.
Dr. Preetham highlighted that nearly 90 out of every 100 diabetic patients suffer from Type-2 diabetes. In 2016, the World Health Organization confirmed that Type-2 diabetes can indeed be reversed. Similarly, the American Diabetes Association acknowledged in 2019 that Type-2 diabetes reversal is possible. Medical evidence supporting reversal has existed even earlier: in 2008, researcher Roy Taylor scientifically demonstrated that Type-2 diabetes can be reversed through targeted interventions.
Further, he noted that as early as 1995, Dr. Walter Pories showed that bariatric surgery could lead to diabetes reversal in certain patients. With substantial scientific backing and growing public awareness, Dr. Preetham said it is essential to promote the concept of diabetes reversal more widely. Declaring November 14 as Diabetes Reversal Day, he argued, would help educate the public and encourage lifestyle-based approaches to managing and reversing the condition.
Doctors Manjunath, Vishwanath Kashi, Seetharam, Rajanna, Yogeesh, Dr. Siraj Ahmed, Vinay and Shyam were present at the press meet.
