Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke with Nepal’s interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki, offering heartfelt condolences for the recent tragic loss of lives during protests led by the Gen Z movement. In a post on X, PM Modi said he reaffirmed India’s strong commitment to support Nepal in restoring peace and stability and also extended warm greetings to Karki and the people of Nepal on their National Day.

Karki assumed office recently after widespread protests on September 8, triggered by frustration over corruption, lack of accountability, and social media restrictions under the previous government. She became Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice and now the first woman Prime Minister, backed by the youth-led movement. She will serve as interim PM until March 5, 2026, when fresh parliamentary elections are scheduled.

Earlier, Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, met Karki at Singha Durbar, delivering PM Modi’s congratulatory message. The ambassador also reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and close cooperation between the two nations. The meeting highlighted India’s support for Nepal’s democratic transition and its ongoing efforts to maintain peace, stability, and collaboration in the region.

This engagement reflects the deep-rooted friendship between India and Nepal and India’s readiness to assist in fostering stability and democratic governance during a critical transitional period.
