The BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) Contractors Association has come forward to clarify allegations surrounding commission claims, while appealing to Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar for assistance. The association’s president, BK Nagendra, refuted accusations against Shivakumar, asserting that the claims made by the commission are unfounded. During a press conference Nagendra addressed the issue by stating, no one has asked us for commission till now. The allegations against the Deputy Chief Minister are baseless. He further clarified that it was not the association that had requested a commission, but rather larger contractors who had raised the concern. Nagendra also emphasized that the association’s interactions with Shivakumar were positive and led to an agreement to settle outstanding bills. Amidst the backdrop of potential income generation through the re-introduction of flex banners in the city, the contractors’ association highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by small and medium contractors. From April 2021 to June 2023, these contractors undertook numerous development projects under BBMP. With over 4,440 bills pending for development work carried out at the ward level, the total due amount stands at more than ₹2,595.42 crore. The delay in payment has placed considerable financial strain on these contractors, leading them to seek redress from BBMP authorities. The association’s general secretary, Manjunath Swami G, expressed frustration over the lack of response from BBMP Chief Commissioner despite multiple appeals. Nagendra also drew attention to the historical issue of payment delays, indicating that this recurring problem impacts development work and the financial stability of contractors. He revealed that both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar have assured their commitment to investigating the situation and facilitating the prompt payment of bills.
