Striving towards the vision of Carbon-Neutral Railway by 2030 by fast-tracking electrification of its network, South Western Railway (SWR) has achieved 511.7 route km of electrification on March 28, surpassing the Railway Board target of 459 route km for the financial year 2021-22.
In 2020-21, SWR had completed 476.7 route km of electrification. The following sections have been commissioned after electrification in March 2022: Yelahanka-Chikkaballapur (45 route km), Tumakuru-Nitturu (27 route km), Sivadi-Omluru (44 route km), Hosadurga-Chikjajur (30 route km), Alnavar-Ambewadi (26 route km), Gadag-Hole Alur (48 route km), Kudachi-Ghataprabha (47 route km), and Londa-Tinaighat (11 route km).
SWR general manager Sanjeev Kishore has stated that no stone was left unturned to achieve and exceed targets. “Close co-ordination and co-operation between divisions and among operations and electrical departments enabled timely availability of line blocks to erect electrical infrastructure. It was possible after the excellent efforts of CORE, RVNL and PGCIL, the executing agencies for electrification works,” he added.
From about 200+ route km in 2016, the electrified track on SWR has now risen to 1,734 route km out of total 3,566 route km of its network.
