Airbnb added ₹113 billion to India’s GDP in 2024, supporting over 1.11 lakh jobs and ₹24 billion in wage income, according to a report by Oxford Economics. The study, commissioned by Airbnb, highlights the platform’s growing role in India’s economy.
Tourism through Airbnb sustained 38,000 jobs in transport, 19,600 in food and beverage, 16,800 in trade, and 10,700 in manufacturing. Domestic travellers made up 91% of Airbnb stays, up from 79% in 2019, driven largely by younger guests. The U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia remained key international markets.
Airbnb guest spending touched ₹112 billion, contributing 0.5% of India’s travel and tourism GDP and 0.2% of related jobs. The ripple effect extended to other sectors, with ₹31 billion in transport, ₹15 billion in agriculture, ₹13 billion in real estate, and ₹12 billion in manufacturing.
Experts said strong domestic travel underpins India’s tourism, but growth in inbound travel remains untapped. Airbnb India head Amanpreet Bajaj added that the platform fuels micro-entrepreneurship, small businesses, and lesser-known destinations across the country.
