Pralhad Joshi to Inaugurate Hi-Tech EV Testing Facility

The new facility will conduct advanced safety, durability, climate, compliance, and material tests on EV batteries and components.

New Delhi

Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, will virtually inaugurate a state-of-the-art Electric Vehicle (EV) testing facility at the Alipore Regional Laboratory in Kolkata today, reinforcing India’s push towards sustainable mobility.

The new facility, equipped with advanced infrastructure, will test EV batteries and components for electrical safety, durability, climate resistance, FCC/ISED compliance, functional safety, and material standards such as flammability and glow wire testing. It will offer manufacturers, particularly in eastern India, internationally recognized certification to ensure performance, safety, and regulatory compliance. Officials said the center will set a benchmark for quality assurance, enabling early fault detection, boosting product reliability, and increasing user confidence in EVs.

The initiative reflects the government’s broader strategy to strengthen India’s EV ecosystem, reduce import dependence, and empower domestic manufacturers with affordable testing services. India has set a target of achieving 30% EV penetration by 2030, supported by schemes like FAME-II, which has facilitated the adoption of over 16 lakh EVs and sanctioned nearly 9,300 charging stations nationwide. Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes worth over ₹44,000 crore are also driving localization of automotive technologies and battery storage.

The facility underscores India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in clean mobility solutions.
