Adani Group Chairman calls Bhutan hydropower project a milestone in clean energy cooperation
Ahmedabad
Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, on Saturday said it was a great honour to meet Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, as his company embarks on a significant partnership to strengthen the neighbouring country’s energy sector.
Earlier in the day, Adani Power Ltd. and Bhutan’s state-owned Druk Green Power Corp. Ltd. (DGPC) signed a shareholders agreement (SHA) to establish the 570 MW Wangchhu hydroelectric project. The deal marks a milestone in Bhutan–India clean energy cooperation, with both sides also initiating an in-principle power purchase agreement (PPA) and signing a concession agreement (CA) with the Royal Government of Bhutan.
Adani said the partnership would pave the way for deeper collaboration in renewable energy, reinforcing Bhutan’s ambition to leverage its natural resources for sustainable development. Prime Minister Tobgay, in a post on X, hailed the signing as a milestone in Bhutan–India clean energy cooperation.
The Wangchhu project, to be developed on a BOOT (Build, Own, Operate, Transfer) model, will require an estimated investment of ₹60 billion. With the detailed project report already completed, construction is expected to begin in early 2026, with completion targeted within five years.
As Bhutan strives to become a High Income Gross National Happiness (GNH) Country within the next decade, reliable electricity from hydropower and solar energy is expected to be critical in driving new investments and economic growth. The country is also pinning hopes on its ambitious Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a 2,500 sq km Special Administrative Region envisioned by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, which aims to integrate urban development with sustainability, holistic living, and mindfulness.
