Churachandpur
On Tuesday, Kuki groups in Churachandpur organized a rally featuring mock “coffins” to honor the members of their community who lost their lives during the ongoing unrest in Manipur. Hundreds of participants carried placards demanding justice for the victims and calling for a separate administration for the hill areas.
This protest follows the deaths of ten militants in an encounter with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Civil Police in Jiribam on November 11. A CRPF constable was injured, and arms and ammunition were recovered from the scene.
In the wake of recent violence, several Manipur MLAs passed a resolution urging the central government to reconsider the imposition of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the state. The resolution also called for an operation against Kuki militants believed responsible for the deaths of six people, including women and children, in Jiribam.
Furthermore, the MLAs demanded the transfer of three high-profile cases to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). These cases include the killing of a woman farmer and the deaths of six civilians. The resolution also proposed declaring the Kuki militants behind the killings as an “unlawful organization.”
In response to the violence, the Manipur government has extended the suspension of internet services in several districts until November 20, 2024.
