Brussels
The European Union’s foreign affairs ministers met in Brussels to primarily discuss the ongoing situation in Ukraine, particularly in light of US President Joe Biden’s decision to allow Kyiv to use US long-range missiles for strikes inside Russia. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, confirmed that Ukraine is now authorized to strike targets up to 300 km deep within Russian territory.
The ministers also discussed providing further military and financial support to Ukraine. However, Borrell acknowledged that there was no consensus among EU countries on lifting restrictions regarding weapon supplies. He stated that each nation is making its own decision on the matter. “Today, in particular, there has been no common position on this,” Borrell said following the meeting.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reiterated his stance of not supplying Ukraine with Taurus long-range missiles. Hungary’s Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, expressed concerns over the US’s approval of long-range missiles for Ukraine, calling it an “extremely dangerous” move that could further escalate the conflict, as stated in a Facebook post on Monday.
