Ladakh
Leh, Ladakh, will soon host the world’s first high-altitude para sports center, aimed at preparing athletes for the 2028 Paralympics. The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, and the Aditya Mehta Foundation (AMF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to make this ambitious project a reality.
Advocate Tashi Gyalson, Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of LAHDC, expressed pride in this initiative, highlighting the recent success of Indian para-athletes, who secured 29 medals, including seven golds, at the 2024 Paris Paralympics.
While the Leh center is under construction, the AMF will select 15 Children with Special Needs (CwSN) from the Leh-Ladakh region for training. These athletes will undergo screening, counseling, and training at the AMF’s Infinity Parasports Academy in Hyderabad.
Aditya Mehta, founder of AMF, hailed Leh Ladakh as a future hub for para sports, signifying India’s growing commitment to supporting para-athletes.
The sports program at the new center will cover a wide range of disciplines, including para sports like archery, athletics, wheelchair rugby, and wheelchair tennis, as well as winter games such as para alpine skiing, para ice hockey, and wheelchair curling.
This high-altitude facility marks a major step forward in supporting and empowering para-athletes across India.
