The Indian junior men’s hockey team, led by Coach PR Sreejesh, has left for Muscat, Oman on Friday, to defend their Junior Asia Cup title. The team is full of confidence after winning the bronze medal at the Sultan of Johor Cup, where they triumphed in a thrilling shootout against New Zealand. India, who lifted the Junior Asia Cup for a record fourth time last year by beating Pakistan 2-1, will begin their campaign on Nov 27, facing Thailand in their opening match in Pool A.
Following their opening game, India will take on Japan on November 28, Chinese Taipei on November 30, and Korea on December 1. A top-two finish in their group is necessary for them to advance to the semifinals. Pakistan, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Oman, and China are placed in Pool B.
Captain Amir Ali spoke of the team’s preparation, saying, “We have worked hard and are ready for the challenges ahead. Our goal is to give our best from the start and reach the final.” Vice-captain Rohit echoed the sentiments, noting the positive energy within the team and how the recent performance at the Sultan of Johor Cup has given them confidence. “The camp’s energy is fantastic, and we are determined to build on our momentum,” he said.
India has previously won the Junior Asia Cup in 2004, 2008, and 2015, making them the most successful team in the tournament’s history.
