The Indian women’s hockey team is gearing up to defend its Asian Champions Trophy (ACT) title on home turf, opening the tournament with a clash against Malaysia today. India, having won the ACT twice, is looking to reclaim victory despite a challenging year marked by missed Olympic qualification and struggles in the FIH Pro League, where they recorded only two wins out of 16 matches.

Led by Captain Salima Tete and vice-captain Navneet Kaur, India fields a team blending youth and experience. Coach Harendra Singh has prioritized fitness, an area Tete cited as essential for overcoming the team’s past struggles. Reflecting on recent setbacks, Tete noted the importance of moving forward, stating, ‘We can’t think about the past; we must focus on what’s ahead.’

India’s line-up includes key defenders like Udita, Jyoti, and Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, and midfield support from Neha, Sharmila Devi, and Lalremsiami. The forward attack will be led by Navneet Kaur, Sangita Kumari, and Beauty Dungdung, while experienced goalkeeper Savita and rising talent Bichu Devi Kharibam will share duties at the net.

The team faces stiff competition from five other countries, including Olympic silver-medalists China, alongside South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Malaysia. South Korea, with three ACT titles, remains a formidable opponent.

In addition to India’s match, today’s (Monday) tournament schedule includes Japan facing South Korea and China playing Thailand.
