Indian Consulate cancels camps in Toronto

Toronto

The Indian Consulate in Toronto has canceled some of its scheduled consular camps after Canadian authorities expressed their inability to provide minimum security for the events. The consulate announced the decision on social media on Thursday, citing the security agencies’ failure to ensure protection for community camp organizers.

This move follows a violent disruption during a consular camp held outside the Hindi Sabha Temple in Brampton, near Toronto, by anti-India extremists. India registered its protest over the incident, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing concern. The Indian High Commission in Ottawa had previously requested Canadian authorities to provide strong security for such routine consular activities, but disruptions have led to growing concerns about the safety of both diplomats and attendees.

The Indian High Commission in Canada has condemned the disturbances and reiterated that future camps will depend on security assurances from local authorities.
