Chief Justice DY Chandrachud inaugurated the National Judicial Museum and Archive (NJMA) at the Supreme Court in New Delhi on Thursday. The event was attended by several other Supreme Court judges.

During the inauguration, Chief Justice Chandrachud highlighted the significance of judicial institutions in safeguarding citizens’ rights and ensuring justice. He explained that the museum’s creation took over a year of planning and about six months for execution, emphasizing its design to be on par with the best international standards. We wanted to create more than just a museum of artifacts, but a space that reflects the importance of our courts in protecting citizens’ fundamental rights, he said.

The museum was designed by the same team behind the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalay and Teen Murti Bhawan. Chandrachud praised their work, noting their experience in creating modern, world-class museums. He dedicated the museum to the nation, describing it as a tribute to the role of the Supreme Court in shaping India’s future. I hope this museum will be an interactive space for younger generations to connect with the institution’s legacy, he added.

Chandrachud, who will retire on November 10, was succeeded by Justice Sanjeev Khanna, as announced on October 24.
