Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the Union government will soon unveil a National Counter-terrorism Policy and Strategy aimed at dismantling the entire terrorism ecosystem. Speaking at the ‘Anti-Terror Conference-2024,’ Shah emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to zero tolerance for terrorism. He said that the new policy will be shared with all states, as they play a central role in combating terrorism.
Shah stressed the importance of integrating technology and training officers to enhance counter-terrorism efforts. He urged state police to collaborate with Central agencies like the NIA and leverage federal forensic facilities. He also honored the sacrifices of 36,468 policemen who died in service to national security and noted a 70% decline in terror activities since 2014.
The Home Minister highlighted new provisions in criminal laws that define terrorism and enable trials in absentia for terrorists and financial criminals. He called for a unified anti-terror ecosystem, with states implementing suggested structures and training modules.
Shah also underscored the need for better information sharing among agencies and urged police staff to adopt a Duty to share approach. He called for collaboration in building a nationwide database on illegal weapons and tackling terror financing, including through cryptocurrency, smuggling, and hawala networks. He also praised the progress made by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) in combatting cybercrime.
