Melbourne

Cricket Australia (CA) has lifted the lifetime leadership ban on former Australian cricketer David Warner, which was imposed following the 2018 Ball-Tampering Scandal, commonly referred to as ‘Sandpaper Gate.’ Warner had been banned from leadership roles and suspended from playing for a year due to his involvement in the scandal.

CA’s Conduct Commission reviewed Warner’s case, and a three-member independent panel unanimously decided to lift the ban. The panel acknowledged Warner’s sincere remorse and his responsibility for his past conduct. They highlighted his continued contribution to cricket, particularly in mentoring young players and fostering interest in the sport within Australia’s South Asian community.

Warner had applied for the ban to be reviewed under Article 10 of CA’s Code of Conduct. With this decision, Warner is now eligible for leadership roles in all Australian cricket competitions, including the Big Bash League, where he plays for Sydney Thunder.

Nick Hockley, CA’s Chief Executive, expressed his support for Warner’s decision to have the sanction reviewed and noted that Warner’s leadership opportunities could positively impact Australian cricket.

Although Warner retired from international cricket after the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, his legacy remains strong. He retired with 18,995 runs in 383 matches, including 49 centuries, multiple World Cups, and an ICC World Test Championship win, solidifying his status as one of Australia’s greatest modern-era openers. Warner continues to be active in league cricket globally.
