Bangladesh interim govt consults on president’s future

Dhaka

Bangladesh’s interim government announced on Wednesday that it is consulting with all stakeholders regarding the fate of President Mohammed Shahabuddin. This comes after protests erupted demanding his resignation due to comments he made about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s departure from the country.

Protesters attempted to storm Bangabhaban, the president’s official residence, demanding Shahabuddin’s resignation. His remarks, in an interview with Manab Zamin, questioned whether Hasina had officially resigned before leaving on August 5.

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’ Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam stated that no decision has yet been made about Shahabuddin’s removal, though discussions are expected to occur this week. “We will inform you of any developments regarding the matter,” Alam added.

In response to the protests and violent clashes with police, authorities have significantly increased security around Bangabhaban. Barbed wire and barricades have been erected, with a heavy presence of police and military personnel, including armored vehicles and riot control units.

Information Adviser Nahid Islam emphasized that any decision regarding the president’s position should be reached through political consensus rather than strict legal procedures. He noted the importance of stability and security in the ongoing discussions.

Tensions remain high as protests continue, with various groups demonstrating outside Bangabhaban since Tuesday. The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Yunus, has been in place since Hasina’s departure amidst widespread protests in August.
