The Nepali government has implemented a ban on plastic bottles in all four-star and above hotels on Wednesday effective immediately, as part of its efforts to address environmental and health concerns.
Narayan Prasad Regmi, director general of the Department of Tourism, announced that high-end hotels and resorts must now serve water in glass bottles or metal containers instead of plastic. This directive aims to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainability.
The government plans to extend this ban to other hotels and resorts after consulting with stakeholders. Additionally, the Hotel Association Nepal, representing over 300 establishments, has committed to banning all single-use plastic items, including drinking straws and cutlery, starting January 1, 2025.
