Mallikarjun Kharge: Adani issue was raised to “save the country”

New Delhi

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s criticism of the opposition for “disturbing” Parliament, asserting that their intention was to address serious allegations against the Adani Group, not disrupt proceedings. Kharge emphasized the importance of discussing the group’s alleged involvement in bribery and financial irregularities, claiming that public money was misused for bribery, with amounts totaling around Rs 2030 crore.

Kharge explained that they wanted to raise the issue in the Lok Sabha under Rule 267 to highlight the serious allegations of corruption against the Adani Group, including fraud and stock market manipulation. He also accused PM Modi of giving preferential treatment to the Adani Group, citing instances where Adani was awarded contracts wherever the Prime Minister visited. Kharge insisted that this issue needed to be addressed to “save the country” rather than disturb Parliament’s work. The Winter Session of Parliament, which began Monday, was quickly adjourned due to disruptions. The Lok Sabha was adjourned after a short session, and the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day after opposition MPs raised concerns about the Adani issue. Meanwhile, opposition MPs like Congress’s Venugopal and Tewari moved adjournment notices, calling for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation into the Adani case.
